| Near the border of the
North Kona and South Kohala districts
lies Kiholo Bay, bordered on the south
by the 1800-1801 Ka’upulehu flow
from Hualalai, and on the north by the
1859 flow from Mauna Loa. The bay is
a good place to see green sea turtles.
At the north end of Kiholo Bay is the
last remnant of a huge fishpond destroyed
by the 1859 Mauna Loa eruption. The fishpond
was probably built in the 17th century,
then rebuilt by Kamehameha the Great
after another pond, located approximately
where Keahole International airport now
sits, was destroyed by the Huehue eruption
of Hualalai in 1800. |
